Shall we meet our heroes then? Well if we don't we won't have much of a tale now will we? ...on with it then.
First, meet Bryan. He's 24, recently freed from the tendrils of the U.S. Air Force and is pursuing enrollment in an art school he will one day regret attending.
Next is Robert, 22 years old, just received a business degree and will one day work for Microsoft. Yes, we're all very proud.
Now meet our heroine, Amy, 21 year old sister to Bryan and wife to Robert, future Aquatic Scientist I (whatever that is)--the undisputed brains of this operation.
Last, but certainly not least, is David, 18 year old brother to Amy and Bryan, recent high school graduate, young, in love, self proclaimed "awesome to the core", and terrible at growing facial hair.
Collectively we will call them B.R.A.D. because it's oh so clever and involves less typing.
BRAD sets out from Seattle, Washington one fine June morning; one fine, ridiculously early June morning. BRA are all on the same flight, while D is on a much later flight.
Bryan finds a pay phone and calls David's cell, hoping he doesn't answer. David does indeed answer, however, and he informs Bryan that he is still in Seattle. "What!?" BRA exclaim in unison. How could this be?! It seems there were two flights to New York from Seattle, directly across from one another, and David managed to be waiting for five hours at the incorrect one. David seems to be a dimwit. He's missed his flight he was five hours early for and now has to sleep at the airport and leave the next morning. BRA are visibly upset that they have to spend an extra night in Paris sipping san gria, listening to street music and walking along the shores of the beautifully lit Seine River. An absolute tragedy at best.
The next morning BRA triumphantly becomes BRAD again at the airport and they are off to see the tower, the wonderful Tower of Eiffel.
Night falls quickly as they climb the steps of the Eiffel Tower. The park below is enchanting, but not as enchanting as the ice cream stand below. BRAD scurry down to the stand and treat their tired bodies to hot dogs and ice cream--so much for their fruit, bread and cheese pact. Bryan is sure the man taking their orders says something inappropriate to his sister, Amy, but doesn't know enough French to do anything about it.
The last day in Paris for BRAD is a day for the Louvre...a day for endless walking, heaps of history, and piles of boring art, a glorious day indeed...that is until mother nature intervenes. As they exit their hotel to catch the bus to the Louvre the skies grow dark and in an instant a torrential downpour is unleashed. Soon the streets become rivers and cafe chairs become white-painted boats, swiftly sailing down the avenues. Our defeated rabble retreats into the hotel, rides the tiny elevator to their room, sulks for a moment or two, and then prepares for their long overnight train ride to Switzerland.
Paris may have won this round, but our heroes will return in good time. Now, however, they must press on, for there is schnitzel to be eaten, barns to be slept in, cows to be mooed at, and sweet music festivals to be missed out on. So we bid BRAD adieu until Switzerland. Safe train-riding, brave heroes!
