What the hell was I thinking?

Arusha Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

I'm taking my wanderlust to a new level by shedding everything familiar and safe and hitting the road with a one way ticket and lots of guts. I start in Ireland, with planned stops in E. Europe before arriving in Egypt, then onto Tanzania for a Mt. Kili climb/safari before arriving in Zanzibar. From there, S. Africa, India, SE Asia, Australia/NZ, and eventually S. America. Afterward skidding home on fumes of glory, whereupon I will quickly be couch-surfing until I can land on my feet again.

What the hell was I thinking?

So we made it to Arusha today after an overnight flight and about eight hours in Kenya, which was beautiful.  I will have to go back and actually spend some time there.  The place we are staying in Arusha is picture perfect, at the foot of Mt. Meru, which we thought was Mt. Kili at first.  It is just glaring down at us and intimidating me.  However, Mt. Kili is even higher so I wonder what were we thinking?  We set off bright and early tomorrow once we meet up with the gear we hope has arrived.  I will write all about it upon my return, which should be Sunday or Monday.  Until then, wish me luck!

I have been climbing all week, and sleeping in a tent, but it was about 7 hours from base camp to the summit uphill, in straight-line winds while battling nausea from altitude sickness. I will write details in my blog when I get better internet. Thanks for the advice on the socks! And I know Jen is cool!! She is related after all :) Wish she were here for sure! I'll send another postcard when I can and answer more questions...oh, but 16 shots pre-trip and now I'm on anti-malarials until I get home. Good stuff. No monkeys yet...

Hey! Hope your climb was glorious. The kids comment below about the socks is in reference to the socks that were snagged back in Sept long about the time you found out Butter was gone. Drawls is drawers. Thought I would clarify. Kid slang. I tell ya. Anyway, hope you had a great climb!

Hey Chris! How long did it take you to hike the whole mountain? What has been the best part about your trip? Have you thrown up from any weird food there? Jen is the most bombest, coolest, hippest, smartest teacher. (Kay, Jen added that.) We are really sorry Jen lost your cat. Stash your socks in your drawls. Where did you sleep when you were on the mountain? And where are you going next? We got the postcard! Thanks. Do they eat monkeys over there? How many shots did you have to get before you left?
