Still here...
August 12, 2007
Well, I'm on day 11 here in Krakow. The gal at the hostel desk asked me this morning why I was staying so long, and I basically told her because I can. I am leaving Wednesday, so just a few more days of this wonderful city.
The last few days have been a bit of a waste since I managed to go out two nights in a row til sun up and then sleep the day away. Friday night was particularly bad, getting to bed about 8 a.m. Sat. morning. The clubs just keep going here. We had a great group of people too, but as most everyone else spends 2-4 nights here, that group is now down to a few. Krakow is cracking down on the number of drunken fools in the streets, issuing fines, and they are particularly targeting the British tourists. We were hanging with a couple of super fun Brits, in fact, and I felt bad because I think they were poorly treated at times. Our Aussie friend who speaks Polish had to assure one gal at a club who didn't want to let us in that we were chill as she was put off by the size of our group. Despite all that, we had a fun few nights, but after two in a row, and sleeping til 2:30 yesterday, I opted to head to bed early last night (well, 2 a.m.). So I woke up this morning rather than went to bed! Unfortunately on my walk home I ran into some unruly Brits fighting some Poles - I mean, an all out brawl on the streets. I guess the concerns are not without reason.
Anyway, I did get out in the square yesterday afternoon. So much is going on all the time, between street performers and other festivities that pop up. Yesterday on stage were folks in Rennaisance costumes, dancing and singing and then a parade came through with trumpets and flag tossers. I just marveled at everything and then went for a jog to dispel all the toxins from my body. Felt great.
Today I hit up another free museum that housed a lot of the Polish traditional attire and chronicled the lives of the Polish. I loved some of the pictures of people in there. Then I hit the Jewish Cemetery, which has one wall made out of broken tombstones destroyed by the Nazis. However, it decided to pour rain so I made a run for it back to the hostel.
I'm feeling pretty anxious to move on though. The bus to Budapest only goes on Wed. and Sat. or else I'd have to take a night train there. There has been much debate at the hostel around the subject of night trains. Having been robbed myself on a night train, and hearing many other stories, I have no interest in taking my chances, but lots of travelers have come through with no problem. In any event, I'll take the bus Wednesday afternoon, taking in a few more sights before I go.
