Lots of W.B. Yeats

Sligo Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

I'm taking my wanderlust to a new level by shedding everything familiar and safe and hitting the road with a one way ticket and lots of guts. I start in Ireland, with planned stops in E. Europe before arriving in Egypt, then onto Tanzania for a Mt. Kili climb/safari before arriving in Zanzibar. From there, S. Africa, India, SE Asia, Australia/NZ, and eventually S. America. Afterward skidding home on fumes of glory, whereupon I will quickly be couch-surfing until I can land on my feet again.

Lots of W.B. Yeats

So I left Galway quite early this morning - before the 7 slumbering men awoke - and took a bus to Sligo, north of Galway.  I traveled through the Rosscommon area, which I believe is where the Cullen roots are (my mom's side).  I like Sligo better than Galway. It is still a larger city, but it has a better feel.  All the museums are free, which is great.  W.B. Yeats hails from Sligo, so he is everywhere.  I checked out the Yeats Society exhibit and some art galleries.  I didn't dig the art.  In fact, one exhibit was just a bunch of scribblings in black ink on paper - in one room just right on the wall in the corner.  I looked around the room in which they were displayed and thought it was such a waste of great space (hardwood floors/fireplace).

Sligo
Anyway, there is an abbey here and mountains off in the distance, so I will do some more exploring this afternoon.  More importantly I'm trying to figure out where I'm staying the next two days in Donegal.  The days are running together and before I realized it, it's a weekend when things get booked.

Oh, some news from the homefront.  Apparently my absence from the pub quiz team was felt at the pub quiz this last week.  I carried them all the way to 2nd place before I left and they slipped to 7th...OK, just being silly but I miss you guys! Keep up the good work!

Well, off to dig up some grub.  I've mostly gone to markets/grocery stores to eat (lots of peelable fruits and crackers/cheese/peanut butter).   It is a lot cheaper and you can eat on the go (plus I haven't gotten used to dining alone yet).  I believe they are trying to cut down on the number of plastic bags floating around in the wind because you have to pay a bag levy at the markets here, only about 20 cents.

OK, 3rd place (I thought we tied for 2nd?) Anyway, we won some t-shirts anyway! Did you get some made yet?

Hmm... I believe in your absence your memories have greatly warped and your impact on the pub team has become exaggerated. We only ever made it to 3rd place. :) Ha. But in all seriousness, you were missed! Fo' Sho. Give 'em Hell Chris.
