Chilling in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

I'm taking my wanderlust to a new level by shedding everything familiar and safe and hitting the road with a one way ticket and lots of guts. I start in Ireland, with planned stops in E. Europe before arriving in Egypt, then onto Tanzania for a Mt. Kili climb/safari before arriving in Zanzibar. From there, S. Africa, India, SE Asia, Australia/NZ, and eventually S. America. Afterward skidding home on fumes of glory, whereupon I will quickly be couch-surfing until I can land on my feet again.

Chilling in Cinque Terre

I arrived in Riomaggiore, the smallest town in Cinque Terre, yesterday afternoon and I immediately met a local on the train.  After a shower and chilling in my room with a view to die for, I met him for dinner and  tour of the city.

My view was temporary as all of us were kicked to another room in a different part of town today.  After dropping bags, I headed out on the 4 hour hike to Monterosso, the larger town with the good beach, not rocks like Riomaggiore.  It kicked my butt but I'm not in as bad a shape as I thought after no running for a few months.  It is spectacular here!  I can't describe it really.  You just MUST come here is all I have to say.

Internet is really spendy, so I'll keep this short for now and try to download one picture at least.

We stayed in Manarola. It was charming. I remember in one of the towns, Vernazza I think, we sat on a jetty and watched boys who were swimming next to these huge dangerous boulders. They would bob up and down and wait for the waves to build and throw them up on top of the rocks. It looked terrifyingly dangerous. Ask around. I am sure someone there knows what I am talking about. You have to see it.

Damn I am jealous!!!!

Riomaggiore is a good town because it is smaller. All of them are beautiful really. Vernazza is the spendiest, and Monterosso has the best beaches, but really, stay in any one you can find because you can reach them all by walking, bus or train (15 minutes only between the two furthest).

Yay! You made it to CT. I can't remember what order the towns are in but Criyce and I stayed in the second up if you come from the south. We had to hike up a killer hill to get to our hostel every night. Have fun there and don't forget to take tons of pics. I love the colors there. Oh, and if you get hot when you hike, you can just do what Criyce did and take your shirt off and hike in your bra! Ha. And don't forget to get a massage on the beach. I love CT! Miss you!!
