The Beautiful Cliffs of Moher...

Doolin Travel Blog › entry 3 of 151 › view trip summary

I'm taking my wanderlust to a new level by shedding everything familiar and safe and hitting the road with a one way ticket and lots of guts. I start in Ireland, with planned stops in E. Europe before arriving in Egypt, then onto Tanzania for a Mt. Kili climb/safari before arriving in Zanzibar. From there, S. Africa, India, SE Asia, Australia/NZ, and eventually S. America. Afterward skidding home on fumes of glory, whereupon I will quickly be couch-surfing until I can land on my feet again.

The Beautiful Cliffs of Moher...

Proof I was there!

So yesterday I walked to the Cliffs from Doolin along the coast (recommended by the hostel caretakers versus taking a bus).  I believe I was trespassing the whole time as my walk included jumping over barricades, rivers, stone fences, past cows and other grazing animals with a curious glare, and eventually walking on the edge of the cliffs to the central tourist overlook.  Imagine the stares I got!  It was so wonderful though.  The views were fantastic! And the peace and quiet of the walk was glorious.  It took about 7 hours roundtrip with stops for photos and just to gaze at the scenery.  Oh, and yes, a coffee in the brand new visitor center.  I got back and chilled at the hostel, finally visiting with some other travelers from TX, Oregon, Canada, Ireland, etc.  Another stop at the pub in the evening and another day already done.

I'm now in Inishmore, the largest island of the Aran Islands.  It's rainy and crappy out - the ferry ride over was rough.  I've never felt so sea sick in my life! Luckily a guy from Connecticut offered me up a garbage bag just in case.  It wasn't needed since I managed to just keep my head down the whole time.  Oh the rocking, waves...not looking forward to the ferry to Galway, but that's not til Monday.  I hope it clears up so that I can rent a bike and explore the island tomorrow.  More after that...
