During the day of the semifinal games we went to the Detroit Zoo. It was rather cold for April, but at least it was sunny. We did get snow fall a few days later. Our hotel was in Warren, which is not far at all from Royal Oak where the Detroit Zoo is located. We were pleasantly surprised at how large this zoo was. Our favorite exhibit by far was the polar bear habitat. Above ground it looks like several I have seen before except that they do have a very large area to roam. When we first arrived, we saw a female doing a kind of dance waving her rump around and walking backwards with a swing of the head. They greatest part of this exhibit is below though. It has a walkthrough tunnel similar to aquariums. There was a glass wall between the polar bears and seals, so the polar bears were very active trying to figure out how to get to the seals. They would push off the tunnel with their massive paws to propel themselves through the water. They would even sit or stand right on the tunnel above your head. We spent a good amount of time here just watching them swim.
