To travel and know Uyuni and their surroundings is just to differentiate between two points, first the trip to Uyuni in this case from La Paz and second the tour to know Uyuni and the surrounding area, mainly the Salt Flat, The Geysers, Red Lagoon and Green Lagoon.

First to get to Uyuni from La Paz you can go by road or an alternative to travel by road to Oruro and from there take the train to Uyuni.
To travel from La Paz to Uyuni direct by road there are options of bus companies whose prices range from $us.

Uyuni downtown
10 single trip per person and $us.10 back; and tour bus company that charges $us.35 per person one-way trip and $us.35 per person for return.
While traveling in the company Todoturismo (http://www.touringbolivia.com) is comfortable and has a bilingual assistance, videos during the trip and other amenities, the journey is tedious, the round trip at 20:00 hours from La Paz and arrives to Uyuni at 7:00 am.,  the next day; to start the tour the same day at approximately 10:00 am., and much more tiring for the return, because a person has been all day travel from Green Lagoon to the town of Uyuni (where one arrives at approximately 18:00 pm) and then have to embark at 20:00 to arrive in La Paz at 7:00 the next day.
The other option that seems more restful first is from La Paz to Oruro, or vice versa ($us.3 per person) and then by train leaving from Oruro to Uyuni at 17:00 and arrive at 02:00 am ($us.10 per person) so you have to find a hotel to spend the night ($us.5 per person), the problem is there are not train every day, so we have to be coordinated very well to the traveling not be more than they should in Uyuni.

The second step is to take a city tour to discover the Uyuni Salt Flat and its environs mainly the geysers, Red Lagoon and Green Lagoon.
This tour can you take directly in Uyuni or is it better to hire this tour in La Paz, the price depends on the comfort that a person wants and the time that you want to stay in Uyuni, one can hire from $us.80 tours per person (for three days and two nights) to $us. 500 per person (for the same time)

I recommend taking a tour of some intermediate $us.100 per person for a period of three days and two nights, this tour can you hired  in La Paz  in a travel agency in the streets Sagarnaga or Illampu.

The clock of Uyuni

Near of Uyuni
