Hopped a 2-hour bus to Cancun and then a ferry over to Isla Mujeres.  On the ferry over, it's amazing how unreal the bright, turquoise-blue the ocean is.  I expected the water to be equally unnatural in hue on the beach, it seems to attenuate a bit as you approach the shore.

I spent a night at the Poc Na Hostel while I surveyed the area for an ideal hotel.  Like, Tulum, I wanted to find  someting close to the beach, with a nice view and hammock to accompany it, if possible.  I settled for Playa La Media Luna which satisfied the prerequisites along with a pool as well.  A bit pricey, but the hotel gave me a standard suite for half the going rate (usual rate $105) once they found out I wanted to stay at least a week, which made it difficult to resist.
carefully selected to avoid the overflow of deck chairs and people to the left and right :)
With time on my side and a day in temporary residence at Poc Na, I was fortunate enough to be in a good position to negotiate since I wasn't hampered with my backpack while scoping out hotels.  This gave me the ability to walk in and check various rates without giving the impression I was desperate for a room at whatever hotel I landed at.  Negotiating in person and on the spot usually yields great results if you have the time since rates are always better than anything you find online which is usually best for trips that require pre-planning due to limited time.  Negotiating in person also gave me the opportunity to directly query management what they were willing to do to win my business and fill any rooms that would otherwise go empty.

Anyhow, like other beach destinations, I find it hard to opt for budget accommodations that I usually do for destinations in cities or in close proximity to the ruins -- if I'm going to opt for a nice piece of beach, the view, access, and a hammock are top prerequisites...otherwise, what's the point?
