Day 1 of Cherry Blossom Festival!

Washington Travel Blog › entry 1 of 2 › view all entries

I have always wanted to see Washington D.C. during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, and this year I finally had the opportunity! The annual festival is to commemorate the gift of 3000 trees given by Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo, Japan to Washington D.C., which was an expression of friendship & closeness between our two countries. The Cherry Blossom Festival is a very crowded time in D.C., because people from all over the country come to see the flowers bloom. It is beautiful.

Day 1 of Cherry Blossom Festival!

Sakura! My favorite flower!

I have been so excited for today!  I have been living up in the northeastern USA for three years now, and this is the first year that I've had an opportunity to make the trip to Washington D.C. to see the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.  I looked at the official website online, and chose to go on the weekend that is "peak bloom season".  I am so glad that I came....it is beautiful here.  D.C. is already beautiful with all the monuments, sculptures, and culture that is to be found in the city, but the blooming cherry blossoms definitely add a nice touch.

One thing though...it is CROWDED!  Soooo many people are here!  I was warned about this ahead of time by a friend that used to live in D.C., but I was still caught off-guard.  It didn't stop us from seeing all the monuments and cherry trees, though.  I had a fantastic (and exhausting) time!

I wish I had known you were in DC! We could have met up since we were there the same day :) It was my first time seeing the Cherry Trees at this time of year. To bad it was so windy that day, but it was still beautiful!!!

Minutes from the White House
The reason that I put this at "highly recommended" is its convenience to travelers. It is just a couple blocks from the White House, is at a safe location, and is considerably cheaper than the other hotels at this location. Taxis in D.C. can be costly, so I'd rather pay a little more for a hotel than to spend the money on a cab far (plus tip). The place is clean, and they offer complimentary bottled water, which also won me over since I drink PLENTY of water when walking around site-seeing. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but that's usually how it is in a bigger city and I'm used to it so it wasn't much of a problem for me. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to the Washington D.C. traveler; especially if your trip is like mine, and you're just in for a weekend trip and want to be close to all the touristy sites.
