Olympic Stadium - getting ready for the game

Next morning, we all woke up pretty early given the fact that, we hit the sack around 6am. We left the hotel around 10.30am after a quick breakfast in order to enjoy the most of this wonderful sunny day in Berlin. First goal was to visit the Champagne bar at KaDeWe in order to start the day with a smile and a glass and just enjoy the decadence of this monstrous house of luxury. Sitting at the 6th floor and

overlook the other Champagne bars has been a joy for many of us before.

Olympic Stadium - getting ready for the game

After a short stay there we decided to go out in the neighbourhood of the Olympic Stadium in order to feel the excitement of the upcoming game in the afternoon. We had been lucky enough to get tickets for the match between Hertha Berlin and Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Hertha was for the first time in year’s number one in the Liga and there was of cause a lot of positive tension in the Berlin air. We asked some of the people going to the match when Berlin last were German Champions at they promptly replied 1939-1931 two years in a row and since then nothing. We took the S-Bahn to the Olympic Park train station and already 3½ hour before the game a lot of people were walking towards the stadium.

Hertha’s shirts were blue and white but there were also many visitors from Dortmund in their easy recognizable black and yellow shirts. The atmosphere was always good amongst the people we met.

At the stadium loads of beer and bratwurst stands were being put up and the barbecues were starting up to handle the hordes of 74.500 spectators. We had to get our tickets in a booth next to the main entrance but we could only do that 2h before the game, so we decided to find a place were we could have a beer and maybe get some food to make us ready for the game. After walking in the neighbouring area next to the enormous Olympic complex we found a Chinese restaurant were we could sit outside.

We stayed there for 2 hours enjoying the sun and the spectators marching by in all their different colours and shouting slogans or sing songs supporting their team.

It was truly a joy sitting there and sniffing the up build of the atmosphere. 45 min before the game we went to stadium and it was getting pretty crowded there but we only saw people in very good mood. Once we entered the gate we finally got a view on how large this complex was. The New Olympiastadion was built in 1936 by Werner March on the foundation of the original Deutsches Stadion. The stadium has the lower half of the structure buried 12 meters underground and I felt it quite sensational to wall in and down to our seats. The capacity of the Olympiastadion reached 110,000 spectators in the old day but today’s maximum capacity is almost 75.000 spectators. Inside you can clearly see the VIP stand that was built for Adolf Hitler and his political associates. Everything is aligned with the symmetrically-designed layout of the buildings of the Olympischer Platz and toward the Maifeld, was the "Marathontor" (Marathon Arch) with a big receptacle for the Olympic Flame.

The Maifeld (Mayfield) was created as a huge lawn (112,000 square metres, 28 acres) for gymnastic demonstrations, specifically annual May Day celebrations by Hitler's government.

The Maifeld was surrounded by 19 metres of land elevation (62 ft), even though the Olympiastadion (to the east) was only 17 metres (55 ft) high. During the 1936 Olympics, the Maifeld was used for polo events and several allegorical Nazi gymnastic demonstrations. The total capacity was 250,000 people, with 60,000 in the large stands that extended at the west end. Next to the main Olympic arena was the swim stadium which had seen better days; the water was dark and all the wooden seats very rotten.

Entering the, at that time almost full, stadium was impressive; here you could talk about feeling small. Many of the spectators were dressed up in the team colours and the song contest between the teams was already going on. The game was good but the home team lost 1 – 3, so I guess the atmosphere could have been a little better. After the game everything went quiet and very organized; I saw no problems at all and thousands of spectators amongst them us went for the train station. The people were dozed down to the train and in 20 minutes we were back in the city centre.

They are in the top - but are not doing so well this year. They just fired their coach. This year its two odd teams in the top. Wolfburg is in the lead followed closely by .. Hertha Berlin!

Awesome. When I was in Europe Bayern Munich was my team, they played good games then. How are they now? Since I have been in the US, I have gotten more and more away from soccer and watch more basketball abd baseball.
