Seals in the harbour at PdE - They were HUGE!!

Wow - "you either love it or hate it here" they say, unless like us, who just thought that it was OK!

Punta del Este is recognised as the most glitzy part of the whole South American continent and THE place to be seen- but only in a Ferrari and a linen Gucci suit with a huge wad of notes (US dollars of course, no the national currancy!).  In our back-packers garb and budget, it was still interesting to see "how the other half live" and it was a really interesting two days.  We stayed in a lovely and friendly guesthouse of a really nice family and first South Americans that we have met that have visited London and travelled through Europe.  We met a very nice couple from back home - (randomly enough from Paignton - the first Devonian we have met!) which has been a rarity in our near 3 month trip and it was a nice couple of days.

Another highlight was seeing the HUGE seals that live in the harbour - the ones we saw a few weeks ago in Peninsular Valdes were nowhere near the size of these fatties - although it could have something to do with the fact that as they were so tame, we could stand literally 2 metres away from them without being in any danger!  Honestly, it was like seeing two giant brown bears (their fat necks were huge!) wearing flippers!

Punta del Este had the most amazing properties - it was like we imagine America to be in the nicest parts of the leafiest and most affluent of suburbs.  Huge houses and opulent displays of exreme wealth - another example of the real disparities of standards of living between the rich and the poor of this hugely diverse continent.

The beaches, however, were not really all that special and not packed with the bronzed greek-god figures that the guidebooks would have you believe - more tanned-to-leather middle agers hanging out of their speedo´s and drinking the same-old "Mate" - the hot herbal drink brewed in a gourd and drunk through a straw (you wouldn´t believe how many people drink it and it is drunk EVERYWHERE - it is also foul - like drinking stewed green-tea mixed with tobacco - even Jeremy´s fomer boss who liked an interesting range of teas wouldn´t like this one!!!!). Many of the restaurants were extremely out of our price range, but it was nice to chill-out in a really quiet area for a couple of nights.

What struck us was the over development of the area.  Huge towerblocks downtown blotted the skyline and there seemed to be no let-up in the development of the area.  Popular singer Shakira was supposed to be getting married in the area, which is a show that money can buy you a lot, but not taste!

We moved on after two nights to somewhere that couldn´t have been more different - Punta del Diablo.  A couple of hundred Km´s up the coast, but a couple of light years away in ambiance..............
