Day 2: Hanoi

Arrive in Noi Bai Airport
Well, continue with the story. This morning on the second day, we take the flight to Hanoi, Vietnam. It reach Hanoi in time but it keeps flying around that city for about half hour. When we finally landed, the rain is very hard (that explain the delay of the landing) but my friends came on time to pick us up at the airport. We take lunch at Pho24, a restaurant that one of the chains is in Jakarta and I know how delicious the Pho is. I told them long time ago that I want to eat at Pho24 in the original country someday and out of sudden, I really come and eat there.

My friends, Tien and Binh, are friends that I met when I lived in Germany, 6 years ago (2002-2003). We went to the same scholarship programme (IT@Asia) that was sponsored by Germany government and organised by a non-profit organisation called CDG (Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft).

I did not see Tien since then (that means 6 years long even though sometimes we meet virtually) while with Binh, I met him again when he came to Jakarta, Indonesia 3 years ago (2006). At that time, he attended an IT seminar in Jakarta and had a chance to stay at my house for couple of days and I became a good tourist guide for him.....according to my point of view, of course :)

After we check-in at Classic Street Hotel, we take a rest for a while and then jump out of the bed and go to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (HCMM) by a taxi with 7 seats (Mai Linh Taxi). I did not prepare myself with an umbrella which at the moment it is very needed. It's still raining and we can not make a good picture of the Mausoleum. There are several places nearby that we should visit too but it is not nice to spend time going around under the rain.
With Binh.
This is only the second day and we still have a few days ahead. Becoming sick is not an option so we decide to go back to the hotel. Along the way to the hotel, we drop by at KFC to take away some rice and chicken as our dinner.

We go to see Thang Long Water Puppet Show. The location is very near to our hotel. We go there by walk. Along the way, there are plenty shops. It is very unique because one street is dedicated for one product type. For example: we walk along the street where all the shops selling shoes. No other products than the shoes. In another street, the shops are selling silver and so on. We buy some souvenirs at a shop which is adjacent to the Thang Long Theatre.

When we come in, there are so many tourists fulfilled the lobby.

The previous show is not ended yet. We take the 9.15 pm show as Binh has reserved for us. It seems that no matter which show you choose, it is always fully booked.

The show takes around 45 minutes and it is pretty amazing. Eventhough it comes in Vietnamese, which we don't understand it at all, we enjoy the show. My children are very enthusiastic. They crane their neck to see what comes next. I have to give a warn, if you don't like culture and everything related to it, don't ever think to see this show. You will end-up sleeping and your snore perhaps will disturb somebody else next to you. It didn't happen to us because we love to see other people's culture. So, that night, we come back to the hotel feel amused and happy. At least, we had something to remember from this day, other than rain and feel tired.

I really enjoyed the water puppets too. Really, really ingenious stuff. Like your kids I couldn't wait to see what would appear next. I thought more dragons with fireworks and stuff would have been cool... it was one of the best bits and happened in the first 5 minutes ! :)

The right hotel if you want a strategic location in Hanoi
The hotel is situated inside the Old Quarter in Hanoi, Vietnam. So, it is very strategic. All you have to do is just preparing your legs for walking around the area, buying from shops that are hundreds there or trying many varieties of foods if you are classified as a taste adventurer.

I chose this hotel because it is in a walking distance to Thang Long Water Puppet, the theatre where we will go tonight.

Beware that there are several Classic Street Hotels. In Vietnam, there is no regulation for giving the same name on the same business. Even if the regulation does exist, people just ignore :) So, you should have the address with you and also a map to point at the exact Classic Street Hotel you want to stay.

The hotel is very small if you see it from the front. Like most of hotels in Hanoi, its width is only around 6 metres. So, to go to your room you have to climb steps, many steps and they are steep. One room per floor. There are 3 locations of staircases and it goes to different rooms and different floors. It is just the characteristic of hotels around Hanoi because as my friend told me, the land there is very expensive (around USD 30,000 per m2). Imagine, a developing country but with that high prices for land and buildings. So, they have to figure out how to make a hotel with such a limited space like that.

When you see the room, the bed almost hits both of the walls and it is hard to go from one side to another side of the bed. Even to put and open your luggage needs a specific skill :)

Television size is only 14" inch, but it has colours, at least (not black and white, hehehe...)

The bathroom certainly has the same situation. It is very small. But everything is okay because we don't stay at the hotel for the whole day like we used to do when we stay in a holiday hotel/luxurious one.

What I really complain is that there is a noise coming from the wall at around 11 pm when we are sleeping, very tired after the flight and the show. Seems that somebody in the process of doing some renovations on the wall, but why the hell he does it in the middle of the night like that?

Because we are so tired, the busy noise can not stop us for sleeping at that night.

The breakfast is Pho! Actually, we can choose, whether has a western one or Pho. Of course we choose Pho because it looks similar with our noodle and we used to eat noodle as our breakfast back in my home country. The hotel staff has to buy the Pho outside (they don't make it by themselves) and the Pho is very delicious. I think it is more delicious than the one we took at Pho24 :)

A Nice traditional show
Thang Long water puppet is a show that becomes a tradition for thousand years in North Vietnam. Because the show performed on the surface of ponds and rice-fields thousand years ago, it is also performed on the same way in the theatre nowadays.

The stage contains a small ponds with greenery water and bamboo curtains at the back to hide the figure of the player.

Tickets are sold in 2 classes:
1. First class, costs VND 60,000 (1 USD = VND 17,500)
2. Second class, costs VND 40,000

Performances take place all days of the week

Time

15:30 PM - 17:00 PM - 18:30 PM - 20:00 PM - 21:15 PM

Sunday morning: 9:30 AM ( especially discount 50% ticket price for youngsters)

In the brochure it is stated that you have to pay VND 15,000 for taking pictures with camera and VND 60,000 for capturing a movie/video. Inside the theatre, everybody ignore this note and just take pictures and movies freely.

As I told you, you must be a tradition and culture lover if you want to see this show. Otherwise, it will be very boring for you and you will feel like wasting your precious and limited time in Hanoi/Vietnam.

For little ones, I am pretty sure that they will love the show because it is interesting to see the puppets appear and dissapear from the water, dancing and perform on the surface of the water, and so on.

Tips from me:
A. Buy the front row seats (A, B, C, D). At the back seats you will see nothing except people's heads in front of you.

B. Be at the place at least half an hour to make your chance bigger in getting the front row seats. The best is to book it online or through someone you know in Hanoi previously like I did.

C. Don't try to relate one scene to another because it does not have any relationship at all. The whole show takes about 45 minutes, covering 17 scenes:
1. Raising the Festival Flag
2. Chu Teu or the narrator
3. Dragon Dance: Four Dragons dancing on the surface of water
4. On a buffalo with a flute
5. Agriculture (planting the rice field)
6. Catching frogs
7. Rearing ducks and catching a fox
8. Fishing
9. Harvest festival. Returning to the native land after college graduation. A triumphant return of a new graduate to his native village aim at expressing his gratitude to the anchestors.
10.Lion dance
11. Phoenix dance (ended with having a big white egg, interesting)
12. Legend of the Restored Sword; King Le Loi after triumphing over Ming invaders, gave the magic sword back to a giant golden turtle who lived in the Lake. This legend is associated with Hoan Kiem Lake or Lake of the Restored Sword which is located in front of the Thang Long Theatre.
13. Children playing in the water
14. Boat racing
15. Unicorns play with a ball
16. Fairy dance
17. Dance of four holy animals

Enjoy the show!
