Leaving Kosovo

The view from the monument of the wars in Kosovo in the morning

I head away from Prizren to catch a bus from Pristina to Tirana. I know it is a little bit stupid because the bus will be going straight through Prizren on its way to Tirana. But I simply did not know what to do with my backs if I had brought them to Prizren - hence it seem like the best solution to leave them in Pristina and take the bus back and forth even though it is almost 2 hours each way.

I get back to Pristina and I hear a bit of the interesting issues of being a country and not being a country at the same time.

Kosovo is sort of recognized as a country but there are disputes and it has not got the full recognition.  Some of the things most countries just takes as granted do not come all that easily to Kosovo. A thing like having a phone system is a problem. You need to have and international dialing code to be able to have international phone conversations. But Kosovo is not able to get an international phone code because it is not fully recognized. Hence they asked around to see if they could get an international calling code - and they found a couple of options. They could get the Slovenia phone company to establish themselves in Kosovo and Monaco’s Phone Company. Hence if you want to call to Kosovo you need to know which company the person you are calling is using so you can choose the right country code for your call. Another issue is the airport. If you want to be able to fly internationally you need an international certification. Once again you can only get a certification for international air service if you are an internationally recognized country.

Hence Kosovo had to find somebody who would do the certification of the airport in Pristina. In the end they managed to get Iceland to do it - apparently there should be an Icelandic flag flying on top of the airport in Pristina indicating that this is actually an airport under Icelandic air authority jurisdiction. I don’t know if this actually true because I did not look for the flag of Iceland when I arrived - I don’t know how I could forget such an obvious thing to look for when I get to a country - in the future I will always just look for a flag of Iceland - just in case.

I have got my ticket from the bus station it is not really expensive going for 20€. And I get into the bus it is almost empty and pretty comfortable so I figure this trip is not going to be too bad and I might actually get some sleep during the night.

We go for a couple of hours and it is a nice road - I know it because I have just been on it twice today going back and forth to Prizren. Then we stop at a restaurant and they collect all our passports to do some paperwork and the driver is having dinner. Unfortunately we will have to leave our nice bus and go into another bus which is pretty full and not quite as comfortable. After an hour waiting time we get going in the new bus and we head for the border between Kosovo and Albania.

The border crossing is not all that bad it only takes an hour or so - my passport attracts a bit of attention on the Albanian side given it is the only one not from Albania or Kosovo. But there is no problem the immigration officer speaks pretty good German and he whishes me a pleasant stay in Albania - and by that I am officially out of the country of Kosovo - that is if it is actually a country at all - I am a bit confused.

Mickey - I am thinking about visiting Kosovo this August by car. Do you have any remarks to that? Anything I should consider?
