Cannon & gravestones

Castle courtyard

After our self-served breakfast we left the campsite and went to Mariefred, where Gripsholm Castle was a lovely sight to visit. Truly impressive were the ancient cannon! Liked them quite a lot but I guess they would have been a tiny bit too big as souvenirs, never mind.

Now we were looking for the local graveyard. Okay, that might sound a bit odd, fair enough, but we were trailing a special spot there. And, then, we found it: the gravestone of the German journalist and writer Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935), who died in Sweden while living in exile. Today Kurt Tucholsky belongs to my favourite poets, who knows, maybe this day influenced my taste for this kind of ironic lyricism that I have today.

In the evening we arrived a comfy youth hostel with a huge green backyard, where relaxing was no problem at all.

We love looking through old graveyards. Yeah, I guess we are a bit "Adams Family" ;)

A Swedish fairytale castle
Gripsholm Castle is idyllically situated on the shore of Lake Mälaren in the neat town of Mariefred.

This lovely and fairytale-like castle was built in the 16th century and offers a fabulous melange of awesome surroundings, wonderful architecture and interesting history.

Both locals and tourists love this beautiful building with all its fascinating details.

If strolling around the quiet and atmospheric castle grounds, discovering Swedish history from the past to the present with the help of a guided tour (daily at 1pm in English language) or enjoying art thanks to the great Swedish National Collection consisting of many portraits, which present popular Swedes – stopping at the castle is definitely worth a few hours.

Please note that the castle just opens daily from 15th May to 15th September.

All in all the dreamy atmosphere combined with interesting aspects concerning the Swedish past makes young and old smiling.
