Appraoching the Palace of Culture and Science

Man what a day.  I got up and discovered TravBuddy time.  I went to upload a few pictures I had trouble with the night before and suddenly it was 30 minutes later.

Thank God the waitress just brought some bread.

I made in into the office after a few wrong turn getting out of the airport.  I would love to meet the guy who designed the roads around the airport.  I have a couple of comments for him.

Yum, bread!

I was feeling a little guilty because I didn’t make it to the office until a little after 9:00.

Making of a giant
I had to find a place to park.  I ended up parking on the street. The spaces had a curb in them so the car was at a slant. There were lots of other people parked that way so I was just happy to have a space.

When I got in the office it turned out SAP was down so we couldn’t begin training.  Then I found out there was a 3 hour meeting planned in the middle of the day.  No big deal, there are still lots of fires to put out.

Yes, Caesar salad to go with the bread.  Must remember to chew and breath.

The day progress and lunch was planned for after the meeting.  It ran late.  I didn’t get food until after 14:00.  Lunch turned out to be butter crackers, stuffed eggs, and appetizer things being called sandwiches.

Intercontiental Hotel Tower
My breakfast had been light so this just curbed the beast that is a hungry Rob.  I also got distracted with work.  I made some progress and was itching to get out while there was still light.  The plan was to head out see a few things in the city and then work in the room.  I got out of the office around 18:30.

I think at this point licking the plate would be wrong.

I was not defeated.  I figured I would head down and enjoy Lazienki Park in the evening.  It had been a warm and sunny day, actually perfect for being outside.  Before I headed to the park I decided to see the Palace of Culture and Science.

Moon over the Palace
Driving in Warsaw is crazy.  I now under stand why one of my colleagues was shocked I rented a car.  He said I was the first person to do that.  Everybody else just took taxis.  I told him I had drive in Bulgaria, Romania, and Paris during rush hour.

If driving is crazy parking is crazier.  When I got to the Palace there were cars everywhere.  I ended up doing what many others had done and parked on the sidewalk.  The light was fading fast and the moon was already out.  I need to move if I was going to get pictures.

The Palace is a mammoth building that was a “gift” from Soviet Russia to the people of Warsaw.

Innocence in the face of domination
It was built in 1952 -5 and resembles Moscow’s Soviet Realist tower.  It contains 40 million bricks.  It is truly something to see in person.  Although it is fairly plain the sheer size is impressive.

Main course, yes I am feeling human again!  Nobody gets hurt tonight.

The building inspires wide range of emotions from admiration to demands to demolish it.  Since the end of Soviet rule the purpose of the building has changed.  It provides office space.  It has still maintained its role as a cultural center.  It has two theaters, cinema, puppet theater, and bookshop. I began at the corner of the Youth Palace and moved towards Congress Hall.

Central Tower of the Palace of Culture and Science
There 28 statues in niches on the two longer sides of the building.  They represent themes such as science, art, and the collective economy.  They are even multi-ethnic.  I began taking photos of them and stopped at 14.  Looking at them, I think the guys must have inspired many club boy looks.  The women look like poster models for breast implants.  They have very round, perky, and solid looking ones.  I know they are stone, but still!

I walked all around the building and man they did not spare anything on the neon.  They have adorned every side with some type.  There are two stone obelisks in the front.  Right next to one of them is a small café that is so close the obelisk looks like a giant garden ornament for it.

As I was walking around I began to feel really tired and like I wanted to just lie down.

Which way do I go?
I couldn’t think of why.  When I was rounding the last corner it dawned on me I was hungry, wonder why?

I saw one more photo worth item and got the picture.  Now back to the car.  I figured I would head to the park area and find a restaurant.  When I got back to the car and was trying to figure out what to put in Tom, a guy knocks on my window.  I told him I didn’t speak Polish, didn’t phase him at all.  He went on explaining something very important.  I basically figured out I need to back out and move on so someone else could have the spot.  I was not in traffic, hungry and no destination programmed.  I randomly punched a tourist attraction from the list.  After a minute or two I reconsidered.  I know what happens when I get to hungry and luckily I was still sane enough to think. I switched directions and headed back to the hotel, food and short walk to removing the shoes and relaxing.  No work will happen tonight!

To distract myself while waiting for food I worked on the blog.  When I go back to my room and logged on, I discovered I have a huge mass of comments and smiles.  I GOT MY HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY AWARD!!! This is awesome!  Now I will smile back at people and send out thank you’s.  Then it is off to bed and try for an early start.
