A day in Niagara Falls

Me next to the falls
Every relative of mine who had previously visited the U.S. took the trip to Canada to see Niagara Falls and always said that it was well worth the trip up. So one day while at work, I booked a rental car for the weekend and decided to drive up to Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side), and then continue on to Toronto, and stay there for the night, see all we could of Toronto the next day and then drive home in time for work the following day back in Marlborough, MA! Insane? Yes! A brilliant trip? Definitely!

We collected our car from National's depot in Cambridge. It was a brand new (700 miles on the clock) wine-red coloured Chevrolet Impala.
Jill under the falls!
Bear in mind I was used to driving a 1998 Dodge Intrepid with 120,000 miles on it. What an upgrade! It took some time to get used to brakes that actually worked properly, as every time I touched them, we almost went flying through the windscreen! I had driven an Impala to Montreal and back previously, so knew it would be a comfortable car for the long drive!

The trip actually wasn't bad at all! It involved staying on the same road for a long, long, long time though, all the way from Boston to Buffalo, NY! We swapped driving duties every two hours or so which made it a lot easier, and we dined in an amazing establishment called McDonalds :D At the border the customs officer had some trouble understanding why we were coming back to Canada for the second time in the space of a month, especially since I was on a J1 visa and Jill on a holiday visa! (The customs officer on the way back was fascinated by the fact that we were Irish students driving from Boston to Toronto and back, couldn't believe it for some reason!) On the way we saw a strange line of school buses on the road.
Under the falls
There must have been at least ten yellow school buses driving in a convoy! This was probably the most interesting thing we saw on the trip! (At this point I'd like to say that the drivers of New York state are very good! If you are in the outer lane and come up behind someone, they always pull over out of your way, unlike in Mass. where you almost have to bump someone to get them to move!

On arrival we parked the car in a multi-storey and headed off to see the falls! We stopped at the first viewing point to have a look and take some pictures, and it was truly breathtaking! We were lucky with the weather, it was a glorious day, and this allowed us to get some very nice photos! There are some other attractions at Niagara Falls, but we were there only to see the falls themselves, especially as were constrained by time! We decided that we'd head down and do the journey beneath the falls, which allowed us to head in through damp caves under the falls, where we could hear the constant sound of the falls above us! There were a few viewing points where we could see the falls flooding down, and at first we thought that was all we were going to see, until we got to the outside area, where we really needed those ponchos they gave us! It was truly amazing! We looked to the right and saw the falls almost flooding down on top of us, with the mist from the splash soaking us! We got to see the falls on the American side with a beautiful rainbow dissecting it! I had a blonde moment, when I went out with my hood down, and then put it up because I was getting wet, the hood was already filled with water so it gave my hair a good rinse! :)

After doing the journey through the falls, a lot of the day had passed.
Rainbow and the boat that goes right under the falls
We decided that we'd get something to eat, have a last minute walk around and then head on to Toronto. All the restaurants were busy, and we were basically left with a choice of Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood, so we went to the HRC to tick off another city we'd been to! We then returned to the car, and drove on to Toronto (see next blog entry!)
