Novotel Hotel, Schiedam (Outskirts of Rotterdam) Main entrance.

Today is the day I have been looking forward to for quite some time. My parents are arriving in The Netherlands from the UK to visit us for the first time and spend the next 5 days sightseeing with us. It is my Father's first time to fly and eventually leave the UK at the grand old age of 55 and he has been quite anxious about it to say the least! Today could not come soon enough as it is now almost 5 months since I left sunny Huddersfield to venture to London with Jaap and I have only seen my parents once since then so we are keen to meet up and have a long overdue catch-up in person plus show them my new surroundings and let them see for themselves how great it is here in this country and how happy and settled I am.

Myself and Jaap agreed to meet them at Rotterdam Centraal station as they were keen to be independant and find their own way on a train from Schiphol to Rotterdam, as it happens they ended up on a train much sooner than we anticipated, they must have sprinted through customs as they are that eager to see us! So we missed our connecting train so drove instead to Schiedam Nieuweland train station near to the Novotel Hotel in which they are staying (see the fantastic review and great photo's below! What a lovely hotel!).

I saw Mum hop off the train first, like a little puppy, so excited to see us, sprinting down the platform to get to us leaving the old man lagging behind!

Many hugs, kisses and back slaps later, we made our way to the hotel whilst listening to my parents excited tales of the flight and train trip. The weather was a scorcher today, melting in the sunshine so we were keen to drop off their luggage asap and make the most of the day. The Golden Oldies were exhausted after their 3am start this morning so we simply chilled in Vlaardingen, enjoyed lunch in the Oranjepark, showed them a few sights around the city before parking ourselves outside the Cafe Concordia bar on the canalside. It was then time for Jaap to leave us (he was meeting with ex work-colleagues for a meal in a city just outside Amsterdam) so myself and my parents enjoyed a chit-chat whilst boat-watching and supping Hertog Jan, the latest Dutch beer I have recently discovered.

Yummy, this went down very well with my Dad. The weather forecast is great for the next few days, it's going to be a fantastic holiday :-)

I made my ex be able to pronounce the name of the beer before he was allowed to drink it so he ended up drinking Corona's... Not the best move on my part as they're much more expensive! :-(
