Busy bank holiday Sunday at the beach
Scheveningen is a lovely seaside resort near to Den Haag (The Hague) and is easily accessible from the city centre via tram. It is a hive of activity for both young and old alike, the busiest and most bustling beach resort I have visited so far here in The Netherlands. I first came here last Summer and been looking forward to coming back ever since. My Parents were keen to visit the beach for at least one of our days out together especially as the weather we have been having lately is so beautiful. We decided upon Scheveningen which is two trains and a tram trip away from us here in Vlaardingen. However it seems half of the country had the same idea! The roads on the way into the town were at a standstill as we approached via tram from Den Haag Centraal.
We had a stroll along the promenade to take snaps of the ‘SprookjesBeelden aan Zee’ (Fairytale sculptures by the sea) A relatively new feature built in 2004 and designed by an American sculptor Tom Otterness.
It consists of 23 sculptures arranged on a terrace with seating and a balcony. If you like what you see there is also The Museum Beelden aan Zee which has an entry fee of 7 euros per adult, you can check out more info on their website. We decided it was too nice to be spending much time inside so we'll save this for another day as I'm sure we shall have plenty more visits to Scheveningen. After fighting our way through the crowds to get to the sea to have a little paddle in the sea (my god it was freezing, Jaap had great fun picking me up and pretending to throw me in the sea fully dressed) it was then time for a spot of lunch. The promenade is filled with numerous beach clubs and restaurants, luckily we picked a great one - Beachclub Copacabana. I opted for the special sandwich on the menu, the Copacabana broodje. Good choice. Chinese tasting 5 spice chicken with peppers and sesame seeds on a sun-dried tomato and rosemary bread. Beautiful. Washed down with yet more Heineken of course, what else :-D I bet this is a great spot on a night out, wished we lived nearer to be able to visit regularly on an evening.
