Hike to the castle
March 21, 2009
After breakfast, which was kinda early (8.30) ;) the whole group splited. Me and Gosia went for some hiking and visiting places, when the rest of the group was skiing. For my reasons i didnt want to go skiing (the possible 'shark attack';) - dont ask;)
Our first place to go was the medieval castle Chojnik (probably from 1364, but also possibly date of construction is 1241). To get to teh castle we had to enter the National Park Karkonosze and climb to the top of the mountain. It took only 1 hour - it was quite weird, in the shadow side it was a bit cold, snowy and brrr, but in the sun side of the mountain the temperatures of the operatin sun were that high, that we could rest a while on the rocks, with no coats and even no sweatshirts - almost a regular sun bath;). Then we continoued climbing and finally reached the top and the castle tower. The view was ubercool - looking to the north we could see the city of Jelenia Góra - waiting for the spring - and looking to the south we could see just the mountains and snow on the peaks - pur winter. Brrrrr!
We spent there some time and enjoyed the view from the tower. Unfortunately after having been burnt the castle wanst ever rebuilt. They keep it like a ruin and built there just a smal mountain hostel.
To get back to the car parked in town we took another route, in order not walking the same way back. The red route was much easier than the previous black one, which we were hinking up the mountain.
On the way back to Szklarska Poręba - we visited the waterfall 'Szklarka' - which i saw last time some 20 years ago. .. maybe even more, when i was on the camp in the Karkonosze Mountains. The hike was just like few minutes from the parking lot. This day was really an "unitedstatian-way-of-visiting-like" day and i mean here that we drove, made some hikes and drove to another place, visited, and drove again. In Poland we don't do that ... at least not me. We go more in one place, then spend the whole day on hikes, walking, sightseeing. But because we were there in winter, and the all-day-routes were closed because of avalanche-danger we had to stay in the lower parts of the mountain and see several smaller 'places' instead of one big trip. But it's ok. We enjoyed it.
