Visiting Arnhem. Up the posbank and under the streets.
March 12, 2009
Today I was invited to visit Arnhem and do some sightseeing there. I would pickup Keiko and Walter at the station in Rheden so I walked to my car and wanted to go. Then my phone rang. It was Walter. He had a problem with his train ticket and the 2 of them would be there an half hour later. Oké, no problem, I went back in my house for another cup of coffee. But at 10:37 I was at the station and they arrived on time. I took them to Gejah house and we had a nice talk and a big piece of apple-pie! Then it was time for the tour. Because of Gejah’s car-size we could only have 4 people for today, but after seeing her car we decide to go with my car.
First she showed us the famous (!) Posbank in Arnhem. It’s part of National Park “Veluwezoom” founded in 1930. The highest point there is 110 meter above NAP (Normaal Amsterdams Peil). But today was a very bad day to walk around there. It was grey and a little bit raining. We decided to do this again in spring with better weather. We drove out of the park and passed “klein zwitserland” a road with hairpin bends. We stopped in Roozendaal to take a view pictures of “Kasteel Rosendael”. There Keiko started a story about the bad weather today. She said to me, it is because the sun has catch a cold and has the flue and is sneezing all over us. Ha ha, very funny Keiko.
I made an illegal turn on the road for an extra stop at “bronbeek”. Bronbeek is a former Royal palace in Arnhem. It is now a museum and a home for elderly soldiers. In arnhem we found a parking spot just in front of the restaurant where we would have diner this day at 5pm. The parking space was close to the Eusebius church or the grote kerk. Its with 93 meters the highest building in Arnhem. It is named after the fourth-century saint Eusebius, the bishop of Vercelli. This church contains an elevator that was added in 1994, which allows us to travel to the top and gives us a view of the city of Arnhem from its highest point. But there was no time for us today. Walter was taking too many pictures. We had only a half an hour left before we should go underground.
At the korenmarkt we had a quick cup of coffee in Café Touché. Then we went to the cellars but the door was closed so we waited. Later on they opened the door and it seems that Keiko didn’t push hard enough to open the door. Small lady --> small powers! So finally we could start our tour. Our guide showed us first on the streets a few facades of houses, and told us that the cellars are beneath those houses. We could also see that they build in Arnhem new and high buildings next to the old center of Arnhem. We entered a few stores where they did not decorate the walls to show the old walls as they were originally. They we entered the cellars and I found it very impressive. I didn’t know they existed although I live there close by. (45 km) There were even restaurants who had there tables inside the cellars. There was also a window above us where you could see the people walking in the street. It was really impressive.
A short stop was at the Luxor theater to see how they restored it. It is built in 1915 by architect Willem Diehl. While we were heading to our diner we had a last stop at the former burger weeshuis. It’s a historical museum. We just could peek a little bit in 1 room. After saying goodbye to our guide, we entered the restaurant. We had a table at the window and I had a view at my car. I had a great diner and a lot of talking to the others.
Then it was time to leave. I brought Keiko and Walter to the train station with my guide Gejah next to me. My last mission was bringing Gejah home. Still talking about the fun day we had. It was rainy but that didn’t touch the fun of the day.
It was fun to see what I didn’t know about Arnhem. Thank you Keiko, Gejah and Walter that I could join you today.
