Air Force flight went smoothly and I was impressed at how well they treated
Checking bags through
The 5 of us filled half of the
passenger list as we flew south out of Whenuapai down to the Ohakea Base. There we collected 65 soldiers who were going
into mission for their 6 months.
waited to go through the customs formalities I noticed a friend from Tokoroa
and chatted to her.She was there to
farewell her son who was one of the soldiers. She introduced me to the young man and we chatted for a while before the
Padre invited us all outside for a short prayer. We then made our way to a hanger beside the
runway and from there onto the plane.
was still just half full as we sat back to enjoy our 7 hour flight to Darwin at the top of Australia.
destination was the Darwin RAAF base known as "TinCity".We enjoyed three movies, all of which I had
seen previously, and plenty of food and drinks throughout the flight. As we approached Darwin we were told the time was 2 hours behind
leaving the plane the NZ Commander came on board and welcomed us to the Aussie
Base.As far as the UN was concerned we
were now "in mission" as Darwin
is deemed to be part of Timor Leste being the final jump off point. He also gave us several instructions about
the RAAF base and it's security.I'm
sorry to say that I have no photographs to share with you or this story would
be written from home and my TL experience very very short.
to stay here in TinCity for just one night though and all we were
concerned about was food and sleep. The
place itself was (censored) with (censored). It (censored) at the (censored) and (censored) but this meant that
(censored) for us.
