Lindisfarne: Holy Island

This weekend it was quite exciting, I went to Lindisfarne with a bunch of Medievalists. Sadly, we went on the worst weather day possible, but we had a great time anyway!

So, we hit up Bamburgh Castle on the way to the Holy Island, and we stopped at this really cute tea house for some breakfast. It was a lot larger than we expected! Sadly, it wasn't open...but it didn't really matter since we didn't have much time to see it anyway. Instead, we passed our time making videos for Tom who couldn't come and reenacting Viking attacks using various accoutraments such as camera tripods and umbrellas. In any case, we had to head north to get to the causeway to the island. Since it is a causeway, it's subject to tide times, so we had to be there by 12:45 and we couldn't leave until 6:15.

Well, needless to say we barely made the 12:45 cut-off, but that made it all the more fun once we finally crossed!

We didn't really realize that it's actually English Winter, so most of the shops and things were closed, and the sites were only open until 2:00, so we made it in to see the Priory and the church and things, but the castle was closed and we couldn't buy any mead or fruit wine. Instead, we reenacted more Viking attacks, made more videos and explored the beach! It was quite chilly and a bit rainy, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Inevitably, we ended up at a nice cozy pub for lunch and played Trivial Pursuit until the evening, checked out the sunset and finally headed back to Durham. It was a great day, but we'll have to go back again in the summer when it's high tourist season and the shops are open. You can see why Cuthbert and Bede loved the place so much.

Looks like perfect outing weather to me - but then, I was seven before I realised that picnics are traditionally held outside and not in the car in the pouring rain. So I'm actually jealous!
