Caye Caulker
A small island off the cost about 45 minutes in a boat from Belize, City Caye Caulker is nothing like its more populated bigger cousin. It has a relaxed atmosphere.with sublime beaches. Locals get around on bikes and golf carts. There are no motor vehicles on the island which is strange at first but you get used to it. I have to laugh at the pimped out golf carts though it just looks strange. Its only $12 a night to stay in Caulker which is pretty cheap considering it has air conditioned rooms. The hostel has hammocks everywhere to relax on and is right beside the beach so you cant beat the view when you wake up in the morning. Also like all other hostels i have stayed in it has free WiFi which is really handy for keeping in touch with friends and family as well as checking in on the football results.
There has been quite a few tropical storms recently, mostly during the night. Unlike Northern Ireland though the rain is actually warm and we went for a midnight swim in it and it was amazing. It reminded me a bit of the Shawshank Redemption moment when Andy gets out of prison and puts his hands up skyward - i know im sad i did it and mentioned it to the people i was with who seemed to have no notion of what i was talking about but i am sure someone out there will.
Decided my body needed some exercise so did some press ups and pull ups on the top of the building we were in. It was a quite place for people to catch some sun but served as a mini gym for me. Nothing too serious though, just a couple of hundred press ups and a few dozen pull ups.
Me, Rob and Philippa went to some kind of reggae bar later that night and it had the most amazing and relaxed layout of any bar i have ever been too. It has swings in it, Hammocks and all sorts of stuff for just chilling out with a few cold ones. The locals were very friendly it just had a vibe to it that i really enjoyed, the bar was called I & I bar as i semi recall.Probably one of the best things i did on Caye Caulker was to go a full day snorkling on a sail boat with Rob, it only cost $40 US dollars. Belize has the second biggest barrier reef in the world second only to Austrailia. We got taken to the 3 best areas for snorkling and saw some some amazing creatures like turtles, sharks and large schools of fish that swam around you. There is no danger of them being eaten though because if you are caught fishing in the coral reef you are fined over $1000 per fish plus you better get used to picking up the soap pretty quickly because a jail sentence would also be likely, so its not surprising the fish seem happy to swim beside humans. We got the tour slightly cheaper because we had our own gear. Really glad i bought the snorkel because i know i will get good use of it in Central America and Oz.
