The Summary
Orange Walk is on the west bank of the New River with a population of 20,000. It was first home to the Icaiche Maya. The 1800's brought an invasion of British logging camps. 1849 brought a migrating population of mestizos and Mayans fleeing the Caste Wars of Mexico. The Icaiche resisted this migration until September 1, 1872 when their chief, Marcos Canul was killed in a battle.
