Visions of Delhi

After our amazing stay in Kerala, we returned to spend our last day in Delhi before returning home. We thought about taking a day trip to see the Taj Mahal, but we had a full two weeks in India and had done enough to be satisfied. Perhaps another time... We decided to just relax in Delhi and do a bit of shopping. What an Oasis we found in Shanti Home for a hotel. (See accompanying review here). This was the ideal place to wind up the trip in India. Comfortable rooms, pleasant surroundings and a great restaurant on the top floor. We were just a stroll down the street to the public transportation, but you had to fight your way to it almost as it is an area full of beggars pleading for money.

Nevertheless, this was an ideal place for us and by far the best hotel we stayed in during our two weeks in India.

We had a chance to try the metro system and ventured to Connaught Place (Rajeev Chowk). This area is famous for its restaurants, bars, bookstores and bazaars. It is also one of the largest financial, commercial and business centers in Delhi. It is a great place to do some shopping as there are a wide variety of places in the Bazaars and on the streets to bargain. There was also a chance to shop for carpets, as I was hoping to find something nice for my home. I wound up purchasing a few Kashmiri carpets to have shipped to the USA. I bargained a little, but not too much and got them for a price I thought was good, for the quality, compared to what they would have cost me in the USA. After our shopping adventure, we returned to Shanti Home to relax and have a good meal at the hotel restaurant.

As a personal reflection to conclude this blog I would have to say that this trip to India was quite a wonderfully enriching experience in cultural ways. Of all the many trips I have taken in my travels this ranks as one of the most special I think and something I feel very priveledged to have experienced. FINIS.
