I arrived in Riga, and its a much bigger metropolitan city than the other Baltic countries...
First let me say that I LOVE my hostel! The Argonaut Naughty Squirrel :D Upon arrival, you are greeted with a alcoholic beverage of your choice... I had the 'apple pie shot' :D I was on my way to explore the city, but decided to join Ieva, a co-owner of the hostel and a Evan a british traveller in a trip to the Riga Market. Now we are not talking about just any other market, this market is HUGE! The market is housed in Zeplin hangers :D
Once I passed through the doors, I quickly realized that this feels like I am back in Soviet Communist times since everyone speaks Russian! Ieva, from the hostel knows EVERYONE! She has a 'bread lady', a 'milk lady', and the most important the 'honey lady' :D The honey lady runs the whole market with an iron fist, don't let the cheerful exterior fool you!
Now I quickly jump into Russian, once I see that people speak it to others, as its more comfortable for some of the workers than English.
Now that we got all the food that was needed and paid our respects to the honey lady, we went to the other part of the market where you can literally buy ANYTHING! You can buy parts to the bicycle, go two booths over and pay a guy to put it together :D
At night there was a huge sports event in town, Latvia was facing Switzerland in the ice hockey world championships, and you aren't Latvian if you are not watching the game...
I joined some of my friends at a local bar, eating great garlic bread, drinking local beer! Latvia won and the entire bar went CRAZY! All that celebrating made us hungry, so @2AM we went to 'Pelmeni' for some late night dumplings... hmmmm goood!
