one of the great things on the road to niland besides the scenery are the smells.  driving down the road with the windows down and the salton sea on my right and land to my left, different smells filled the air as i passed through.  at one point there was what i think was lavender growing on the side of the road, and the pleasant smell filled the air.  at another down the way there was some sort of farm - i don't remember if it were vegetable, herb, or fruit but boy it smelled good!

when i finally reached the turn off for niland, which is almost easy to miss, i drove through the tiny town and followed the signs to slab city and salvation mountain.  sure enough, just as i read, you could see the mountain coming up from quite a distance away.  and when i reached there i wasn't the only one visiting!  so i spent the next few hours touring the area and chatting with the other visitors, and we even got to meet and talk with the artist, leonard knight!  he lives on site in an equally decorated mobile home and is more than willing to sit around shooting the craic with anybody who comes by.  AND he gives out puzzles!  score!

p.s. if you have any old cans of paint sitting around in your garage, leonard will be more than willing to take them off your hand. :0)
