early morning fog along I10...

when looking up directions i found myself fascinated by this body of water that was being referred to as the salton sea because i knew for a fact there were no seas in that area of southern california!  so on my drive when i kept seeing signs headed that direction i decided that if the oppurtunity presented itself i'd definitely make a stop.

sure enough shortly after splitting off from highway 86S i found myself driving alongside the water and made the first turn off that i could.  i found out that if you visited the visitor center and signed their guestbook you could park and enjoy the view for free for a period of time - so that's just what i did.

the visitor center turned out to be very informative giving you all the information you could want about the area as well as playing an educational video explaining how the sea acquired its high salt content.  it was especially helpful to someone like me who had never even heard of the place until a few hours prior.

being such a beautiful day i had a hard time leaving!  and after walking along the water for a while and marveling at the... shell beaches i guess is what they were, i found myself parked on one of their covered picnic benches staring out at the water and listening to the birds chirping around me as i had lunch.... before i finally pried myself away to continue my drive to niland...
