UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden

The Mathias Botanical Garden is one of the gem that I miss very much eversince moving back to downtown area. It is one of my favorite place to be one with nature and not feel alienated by my economic status. LA has many green spots but seeking it out can be tiring. Sometimes, you just want to go to a place you can count on when you are tired. UCLA garden does that for me. Every time I feel claustrophobic on the traffic jammed freeways, I just remember the little stream at the garden, where the turtles sunbathe, and the koi followed every movement of the water, to erase the existence of all cars, noises, and those righteous drivers.
It is a place that teaches patient. When I volunteered at the garden years ago, I liked the quietness and the peace. But I didn't understand or couldn't stand the amount of work I perform. Times always fly by but I didn't see any changes in the garden. I didn't see the longterm goal or vision. Now, I came back, saw the hummingbird bed that I helped. How beautiful it is. Birds came. Butterfly came. I feel a bit proud but as the same time foolish for not seeing it back then.
I can't express how much I love this place. It reminds me of Kew's garden of Keat that made me feel like a stupid illiterate fool when I was a freshman. I just hope that even with the budget cut, UCLA can still maintain the little green space that I love.
