Cheap camping on the beach
For the past three years, I have dedicated a few days of my spring break for camping in the quiet Perdido Key "primitive zone," located just near the Florida-Alabama border.
Camping is free, but you are required to pay a small parking fee (less than $10 for a one-week pass) and fill out a short form so the park ranger knows you're there. You'll also need to bring all of your own food and drinks, as none are provided-- this is primitive camping after all!
There are no shaded areas on the island/peninsula, so I recommend lots of sunscreen! Also, pack lightly! It can be a bit of a trek from the parking area to your camping spot.
There are usually very few other people camping there, and there is plenty of room for everyone. You'll feel you like you're in the middle of nowhere. Primitive camping is open to the public year-round!
