While we all enjoy travelling around the world, much fun can still be had in visiting places close to home. In this blog I will write about the towns that I like within 2 hours by train or car from my home town of Kortrijk.

Veurne, a tiny medieval town

Veurne is a small town of less than 10,000 people in the Northwestern corner of Belgium, in West Flanders. West-Flemish people (such as myself) call this area "Bachten de kupe" in our dialect, (which loosely translates as "behind the barrel" with the barrel being the IJzer river)
It is a very sparesly populated region which makes it possible that a small town such as Veurne is seen as the biggest local center.
Because of its small size the town never really outgrew its medieval center. In most Belgian cities you have a medieval(ish) center and a more modern part around it, but Veurne has just its old center that is surrounded by fields. If you happen to go to the Belgian coast or to Bruges, it can be nice to visit Veurne as well, the only downside is that the central square is a big parking lot, they really should change that.
