Handball and beach volley
June 13, 2009
Last week I had 4 exams and a thesis defense in one week, I almost didn't sleep and even got ill in the end, so I decided it was time for some days of relaxing and therefor I returned to my home town of Kortrijk.
Now, although relaxing is fun, it doesn't give me much to blog about. I spent most time sleeping, lying in the grass in the sun, reading, playing computer games, and walking through town. The weather is nice and the town is very crowded and has a pleasant atmosphere, also there is apparently a beach volleyball tournament going on on the central square this weekend, so I watched some games there as well.
On Wednesday there was a handball game Belgium-Iceland being played in a sports hall here. I was planning on going but it was raining SO hard, that I started to doubt (since I had to go by bike) . But in the end an Icelandic friend of mine on MSN messenger convinced me to go see it, and it was actually a lot of fun! Of course Iceland won, they were Olympic silver medalists in Beijing, but Belgium played surprisingly well, at half time it was 16-16, so it was not dull to watch at all, I discovered that handball is actually a very exciting game to watch. Much of it depends on surprising your opponent through clever passing, but the problem is that those passes usually are also surprising for the own team mates, so very quick reflexes are important. In the end Iceland won 25-33 or something like that. On the way back it was raining so hard, I could barely see 2 meter in front of me and when I arrived at home I could not possibly have been more soaking wet, but it was worth it.
Now I'm slowly starting to study for my next exam, there's two left, the last two of a six year academic career, how time flies :-)
(I took the pictures with my iphone so the quality is pretty bad, but it's all I had with me)
