Brussels, boring?

1. Busy Brussels (Brussels traffic near the Koekelberg Basillica)
Brussels is a city that has a serious image-problem, that's the least you can say. A recent poll amongst Tripadvisor.com visitors rated Brussels as the most boring city in Europe, this wasn't really a surprise since it "wins" this award every year. Even Belgians, and especially Flemings, tend to avoid Brussels whenever possible. However I think most people either have never been in Brussels, or have only been to the grand place and back and labeled Brussels as "boring" after a couple of hours. Another reason for the bad image is the EU I think, the EU has an image problem, and as the political center of the EU, this image reflects on Brussels as well. But Brussels is so much more than the EU, but requires a litlle effort from the visitor in order to really appreciate it.
2. Art Nouveau Brussels (Art Nouveau started in Brussels and still has many Art Nouveau houses worth visiting)

Brussels is a city of contrast, it has at the same time a very high unemployment rate (over 20%) and yet is one the wealthiest cities of the EU (after London and Luxembourg City), it has some of the most beautiful houses from the 19th and 20th century next to some of the ugliest buildings known to man, it is as far as I know the only city where the center speaks one language (French) and the surrounding towns speak another (Dutch), it is both the capital of a small country like Belgium, and the center where decisions are made that affect the entire world (EU Commission, NATO headquarters), it is both 1 city and 19 different towns-within-the-city that each have their own feeling.

In order to counter this bad image just a little I'm posting 20 pictures of brussels showing different aspects of the city.

Looks like I'm spreading the reputation rather than countering it... d'oh! that wasn't the plan ;-)

You went there just to have fries? Haha that's hilarious :) Glad you liked it!

Personally I prefer Antwerp too, I'm not trying to say Brussels is a perfect place, just trying to counter some of the incredibly negative comments that seem to come up whenever Brussels is mentioned :-)

What you say is true. However, when I'm in Belgium I much prefer Antwerp. It just feels more real to me.
