Nearing the school you could see lots of old wagons and people.

This first weekend in March has turned into a nice sunny and comfortable one.  So it was a great time for the Central Valley Woodie Club to gather for their annual show and road trip.  This year the main gathering was in front of Redwood High School here in Visalia.

The event featured well over 40 classic and custom Woodies from as far away as Hawaii.  The car that drove, rather than being trailered or shipped, the furthest to get here was from near San Diego, a trek of 372 miles.

A “woodie” is a car or station wagon that has wood as part of its original construction. They were popularized mainly because of a shortage of metal during World War II years. They declined in popularity in the 50s but have enjoyed a resurgence from classic car collectors.

This was a busy day for all the folks who wanted to come out and check them out and get pictures. You will see that with the cars parked so close together and with so many people there it was a challenge to get some of the shots.

But I am old enough to remember when they were the “rage”!

Driving up and seeing all the classics lined up on the lawn in front of the school brought great memories.
