Booked Firefly flights very cheaply after Chinese New Year - Penang to Khota Bharu for 53myr approx 15USD one way .

Spent first day and night at Dynasty Inn in Kota Bharu http://www.dynastyinn-kotabharu.com   Decent Hotel although overpriced 180 myr a night for river view room- central walking distance to most museums, river , markets etc ..Not a great deal to see in KB

Moved on the next day to a  small chalet  (Sri Melawi ) at Backok beach - 45mins drive south of KB.  The lady owner kindly drove me from KB down to Bachok Beach . A bit run down but quiet and peaceful , right on the beach . 70myr a night

Got busy on the Friday with families and groups of school students .

It was still very low season ,the end of the Monsoon , so the sea was rough and dirty looking , although fine to swim in as long as you were a strong swimer .

The owner, Wan ,was very kind and cooked lunch and dinner for me and showed me around the local markets and village area.

Drove to Pasir Mas railway station very early on the Saturday morning to catch the 7.00am "Jungle Train" down to Kuala Lipis. The Train was 5hrs late . The train stops at every local station and people crowd onto the 3 carriages with all their belongings including things they wish to sell at the next Pasir (market)down the line. Malaysians are amongst the friendliest people in the World and soon got sharing food and trying to have conversation with people , either me using my broken Bahasa Malay or they would practise their English back to me.

Arrived in Kaula Lipis in the early evening , stayed overnight before taking taking taxi and bus down to Kuantan for three nights.

Local School Girls on the"JUNGLE TRAIN"

I hadn't been to Kuantan for 15yrs but not a lot changes, the town is set on the river and I had booked into the Mega View Hotel http://www.megaviewhotel.com/ which was good value for money , nice clean but small room with great view of the river. 140 myr a night inc great bfast .

Changed Hotel the last night and stayed at the Classic Hotel    http://www.cuti.com.my/hotel/info.php3?id=578&hotel=Classic+Hotel , still in down town area , near the river and the local bus station . Clean comfortable room and very cheap at 75myr a nt inc bfast ..this price was after bargaining for a while .

Took local bus to Cherating Beach - 70mins or so on bus -4myr each way - Cherating is a bit too isolated and not a lot to do - The bigger hotels cater mainly to foreign package tourists in High season .

The old "TIN TOWN" , Sungai Lembing
The local tourist type ...cafes were way overpriced and service in general was not good.

Next day took another local bus to Sungai Lembing- One of the oldest Tin Mining Towns in Malaysia ..very good museum , the town is now like a ghost town but is pleasant to spend a few hours walking around and imagining what it must have been like in the 50's or 60's when the Mine was in full use.

Flew back from Kuantan to Penang with Firefly - 53myr one way inc tax.

It was a very relaxing good value break - just what I needed after completing a six month course.
