For those who have the bit of time to spare and concious of budget, and am heading for Harbin from Shanghai, it is not bad a deal to catch a flight from Shanghai to Beijing, and catch a overnight train from Beijing to Harbin.
The money saving is mainly due to the high frequency of discount for internal flights between Shanghai & Beijing. Flights to Harbin, due to its distance, are not that easy to get discount. And not to mention, it's one of those infamous and dreaded China golden travel weeks again! Everything is just going to cost more!!
This trip was truely special in many ways.
First, my rarest chance of holidaying in China where i should be home in sunny Singapore for Chinese New Year reunion!
Second, I am touring together with my student and his group of friends, whom I only got acquaintance during this trip, together with a colleague of us. Pretty mix of age combinations in the group too.
Third, we could get to witness Beijing in its franatic preparations for Olympics 2008 for the next remaining 6 months, as well as to Russian-influenced Harbin and see pristine snow and ice carving sculptures !
Lastly,it's my China furthest north travel stint so far. If only I could visit Xinjiang too =) I want to experience the -35 degree of coldness personally. I really like winter coldness
We were discussing what we wished to do in Beijing while on the move. Top on our priority was to catch a real glimpse of the Beijing famous Bird Nest Stadium for Olympics. For the most who had not been to Beijing, Forbidden Palace was next. There were alot of other places like Summer Palace etc, but due to the time constraint, yes all these were off the list.
In fact, today was the traditional day for reunion dinner in Chinese Calendar, being all out in stranger land, we had planned for a good decent 'reunion' dinner for all of us! Yes, a steamboat dinner, in Beijing most traditional steamboat restaurant too!
We have to be at Beijing Railway station by 9pm as we have an overnight train to Harbin to catch! Hard luck for me, I was sleeping on the most upper deck of the hard sleeper section. Argh, i've to bear with it till our next stop - Harbin!
