Brady Goes to China
February 9, 2009
My arrival in China was a whirlwind of activity, and I was quickly swept up by my contact, Peter, and sent across town. We arrived in the Minhang District at the company that I would be working for, Anovo Co. Apparently this mid-sized computer manufacturer was attempting to expand into the English speaking markets, and they needed my help. I figured I could do the job well enough, and we discussed the details of my internship with Peter as translator. It turned out that my boss at Anovo also wanted me to homestay with him. Being a poor college student, free living sounds good. He also wanted to me teach his sons English. I figured I know English pretty well, so that shouldn't be a problem.
To make a long story extremely short, it was a problem. After two weeks of living with my boss's family, I decided I needed more independence. I also decided that I wasn't very good at teaching hyperactive 7 year old boys English and babysitting until mommy and daddy got home late from work. Luckily Peter helped me quickly find an apartment, and my new location is 45 minutes closer to the city center and only 30 minutes by subway to work. That was two weeks ago, and everything seems to be going well since then.

A great choice for the backpacker
I've stayed at Mingtown a number of times now, and I still love the location. Not 5 minutes walk from People's Square, you can get to pretty much anywhere in Shanghai within 30-45 minutes by subway. Better yet, there's so much to do within 10-15 minutes walking distance from Mingtown that you might not even need the subway. Mingtown is located adjacent to the Marriot, which is a huge building, so I've never had trouble finding it. It also has a cozy lounge with a bar/diner if you want to eat or pre-party. Be forewarned that if you visit in the winter it's going to be chilly because the bathrooms are connected by hallways that are open to the outside air. An odd design, but I was always able to keep warm once in bed.
