Friedrichshafen & Lindau - Outbound journey to Liechtenstein
The third attempt had come to make it to Liechtenstein. If so, today would be my forty-second country of Europe visited. As usual I had my travel buddy with me, Ollie and we set off to Stansted airport early for our flight to Friedrichshafen in southern Germany. The flight landed twenty minutes early, which meant we caught the earlier train and we had a few connections to make, which meant that we would be in Liechtenstein earlier than expected. First stop was Friedrichshafen centre where we brought our return rail tickets to Schaan in Liechtenstein which cost us €18.50 each way. With twenty minutes to kill, Ollie snacked into a McDonald’s snack which is a new addition to the railway station, and then we walked down to the shore of the Lake of Constance, one of Europe’s largest inland lakes.
Here I fed the seagulls with a croissant which I brought earlier and it was nice to see about twenty of them fighting for the food in midair. I could see a ferry leaving the nearby port making its journey across to the Swiss side of the lake with its mountains overlooking the water, with enormous strength of power. Back on the train to Lindau, where we changed for another train straight through Austria to a town called St Margrethen in Switzerland, where we had a seven minute wait, then another train to Buchs which is on Liechtenstein/Swiss border.
