Whether it is safe or not to eat street foods, well it all depends on the place, cleanliness of the food and the individual vendor. It varies greatly from street to street whether in Kunming or the whole China. Some come to China and find that their stomachs simply cannot handle street food in China. For me, it is better to avoid it as much as possible, contracting a disease by eating street food in China is rare, but the food on the streets will not be fresh. I enjoy eating out on streets but I do observed a little before ordering eg. flies buzzing around food? Colors of the meat and vegetables and how are they being stored etc..... a little common sense can go along way when it comes to deciding whether or not to eat on the street....
One thing I always look forward when I was in Kunming is their fruits in season! There are about 2 or 3 types of seasons fruit every 2 or 3 months times, especially mid of seasons when the fruits are all ripen in the right time, it is very very sweet, one of my favourite is Loquats, sweet with a little sourish, it was my first time eating fresh loquats in my life, can't find anywhere else. And the fruits are cheap, whether they are in stalls or street sellers.
