I work as a secretary for four teams. With one of these teams I went to Leiden for the yearly day out at the 24th of september of this year. My teamleader wanted to organise this day out, but it turned out swiftly that I had to organise it hihi I didn´t mind though, I love this kind of things. He wanted to do a day in his hometown Leiden this year! So that´s what we did.
Leiden has a beautiful 17th-century historic centre. At one time the second largest city of the Republic after Amsterdam it can boast a rich history. Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden and learnt his craft with a Leiden painter. In Leiden the first university of the new state of the Netherlands was established.
The day started with very bad weather, lots of rain but after two hours it cleared up and the sun began to shine. It was a bit chilly though. We began with coffee with homemade applepie at the Cityhall café restaurant. Their site is: www.restaurantcityhall.nl
Then we got our questions for the puzzle. First we had to go to the Hortus Botanicus, A green treasure hidden in the historical centre of Leiden. Founded in 1590, this is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands and is part of the University of Leiden. It was beautiful!!
We had a lunchbreak at restaurant De Grote Beer which lies on the waterfront so you can rent a boat as well and make a boattrip through the canals of Leiden. We didn´t do this but it´s an option. Their site is: www.
After lunch we went to Museum Boerhaave, the National Museum of the History of Science and Medicine as the national treasury of scientific endeavours, the museum shows some 400 years of advances in knowledge. Developments in the various sciences can be viewed in 24 rooms on two levels. The emphasis is on contributions from the Netherlands. It´s really a beautiful museum!
Then it was time for a drink at a nice terrace and relax! After a while we strolled through the citycenter and went back to the Central trainstation where the restaurant was located. We had dinner in the old Luxor cinema which is now an "All you can eat" Wokrestaurant in a great ambiance! their site is: www.restaurant-luxor.nl
Besides the weather in the morning it turned out a very nice daytrip! Till the next time!
