Newport Cliff Walk
On Sunday, we got up in time for the continental breakfast at the hotel. They had a room set up upstairs with tables and a buffet-like setup, with fruit, cereal, pastries, muffins, bagels toast, etc. and a waffle machine with cups of batter lined up, you just poured in on and waited 2 minutes. We ate our fill, and took some apples and banannas for the hike later. Some of our group went across the street for a more traditional breakfast at the restaurant. We joined them as they were ready to leave, and we all headed back to Newport together.
We found a place to park on one of the side streets leading to the cliff walk, and headed on down to "the 40 steps", a stone staircase leading down to the water.
The trail ran along the seashore
We took several pictures there, them moved down the trail. The cliff walk runs between the ocean and a series of mansions that were the summer homes of rich folk back in the day, such as the Vanderbilts, Wetmores, and other titans of industry. (They called them summer "cottages") Most of these mansions have been preserved with the original furnishings, and are maintained by the historical society. Movies such as "The Great Gatsby" have been filmed here. We didn't take the tours of the mansions themselves, since most of us had been there before. (Newport Mansions is a popular "class trip" destination in Connecticut school systems) so we stuck to the trail by the sea. The cliff walk went for miles, we walked down as far as we felt like, then headed back. Took many pictures of the seashore. A nice relaxing Sunday stroll!
