March 1, 2009
Acanceh a large Maya site is located 10 miles southeast of Mérida off of Highway 18 in the modern town of Acanceh. Acanceh was founded between 200 AD and 300 AD in the Early classic period. Acanceh grew to cover an area of more than 2 square miles and had more than 400 structures. There are several restored and consolidated structures. A must see is the restored "Palace of the Stuccos" that is 162 feet wide,20 feet tall, and has a series of elaborate friezes on the facade. The design is very complex many vaulted room and corridors, with ornate detailed carvings throughout this structure. The architecture of most of the structures at Acanceh have Teotihuacan features incorporated into their outward appearance.
The main structure of Precolumbian Acanceh is at the northern edge of the modern town square. it is perfectly aligned with the modern street plan.
