The Mayan Puuc Trail is a small geographic area southwest of Merida
, Yucatan, Mexico by about 50 miles. This blog will provide the plan to visit Uxmal, Kaban, Sayil, Xlapak, Labna, Edzna, Hochob, Xcalumkin and Dzibilnocac. There are also two historic caverns to visit Loltún Caverns and Xtacumblixunaan. Home base for this Puuc Route will be Ticul. You could reach all these places with several day trips from Merida. You could also make your home base at one of the expensive hotels at Uxmal. However Ticul offers affordable hotels, several more than adequate restaurants, good locations for purchasing the essential of life and an opportunity to visit a nice town. There is a huipil weaving industry here, The embroidery is of very good quality.
On my last visit there was a utilitarian pottery industry. I can recommend Hotel Plaza, Hotel Sierra Sosa, Hotel San Miguel, Hotel Bougambillas and Hotel - Motel Cerro Inn. Hotel Plaza is located on the town plaza at Calle 23, Number 202. They do accept most credit cards, but want to charge an additional fee for accepting payment with a card. I have been given quoted an American tourist price on several occasions. There are some rooms with air conditioning. The non-tourist price is between $20.00 and $30.00 per night depending on the length of your stay. The room with fans are just $5.00 less per night. The rooms are average in size and very clean. This hotel can be noisy because it is on the plaza. I would recommend ear plugs and or an interior room. The Hotel Sierra Sosa is located at Calle 26, Number 199A which is just northwest of the plaza.
The rooms were clean, basic and with ceiling fans. I recommend that you ask for a room at the rear because they have windows and check the ceiling fan to confirm that it functions. It no one is present at the Hotel, then check at the shop next door. The last time I stayed here it was an electronic shop. These rooms were cheap, less than $5.00 per night. Hotel San Miguel located at Calle 28, number 195 which is near the market. Rooms here are clean, basic with ceiling fan, bathroom and much brighter than the windowless rooms at Hotel Sierra Sosa. This hotel is interesting in that it offers rooms for 4 people at less than $15.00 per night. The regular room were under $10.00 per night. The last 2 Hotel Bougambillas and Hotel - Motel Cerro Inn are about a mile from the center of the town on the Muna/ Merida highway.
They are across Muna - Merida Highway from each other. Hotel Bougambillasis the newer of the 2 highway hotels. The grounds are well kept, the interior of the hotel is covered with bright tiles. The rooms are clean, basic with ceiling fans. The rooms were rented based on the number of beds, one bed was under $12.00 per night, two beds was under $25.00 per night. These prices fell once I was recognized as a good frequent customer to $10 and $15 per night. Hotel - Motel Cerro Inn is older and the facility shows its age. The grounds are large and shady. The rooms were less clean than all the other Hotels in Ticul. They are basic with ceiling fans. The rooms were under $12.00 per night. There is a palapa restaurant that is a great place to sit, have a few drinks. I would eat my main meals else where!
I would try to eat at Restaurant Los Almendros as many times as possible. This place specializes in Yucatecan dishes. It is located at Calle 23, number 207.
