No time to waste

This was my 2nd time in Bangkok, but I took along 3 good friends with me for their virgin voyage to the city. And with a couple of good local friends serving as tour guides, the trip turned out to be a success for all involved.

Restaraunt
Amazingly, the AirAsia flight to Bangkok arrived early (must have been either some good tail wind, or the pilot wanted to make it home for dinner on time).  Good for us, as from the airport we headed straight to a restaraunt by the water.  After some delicious Thai seafood cuisine, we went to Vertigo, the open roof sky bar.  This is one of my favorite places to hang out in the city, there is nothing like being high above everyone and looking down and seeing no end to the buildings around you.  Only then it becomes easier to understand how the city can house 10+million people.  Everyone had their share of drinks and once the group was warmed up we then went to Q-Bar.  Funny thing is the Taxi driver had no clue where the place was, but luckily my clubbing sense was on high alert and I spotted the sign "Q-Bar" in the corner of my eye as we were making a turn.

Stayed there till the place closed down (which by BKK standards, it is already at 1:30am unfortunately).  We thought about staying out longer and looking for "underground" places, but the group consensus was that we had to wake up early the next day, so let's leave the late-night clubbing for tomorrow.

In the morning it was off exploring the famous weekend market - Chatuchak.  Where everything is cheap, but at the end your buy so much that you spend a fortune!!  Good fun nonetheless.  If you are the type to be overwhelmed by crowds and heat, then this is not the place for you.  At night we attended the Siam Niramit show, a cultural play about  Thailands history & beliefs.  An amazing performance.  There were elephants, acrobats, fire, rain, and everything else that they can think of to show off the wonderful and rich culture of the people.

Then what to do after such a busy day?  - go drinking of course!  First, we checked out Soi Cowboy, but did not go into any shows.  Then we went to Club 87 at the Conrad Hotel, when that closed down, we headed to the Tunnel, and spent exactly 45 seconds there until that place too closed down - then finally we were left with no choice but to have the taxi take us to an underground place.  We managed to grab a drink just as the police came to shut the place down!

The last day was spent doing some more cultural explorations.  We visited the Grand Palace & then later took a boat ride thru the city.

Fun times in Bangkok, and for me at least - this won't be the last time ;)

Thailand customs sucks! They are horrendous and they are slow. Perhaps the only country beating them at this is Indonesia. You would think that after building a new state of the art Airport, they would design it in such a way that the flow of people works better.

But, at last - I have found a trick! Well, it's not really a trick, it's just timing. If you get there between 10-10:15pm, there is no one at customs! You can be out of there in 1 minute! See the problem is, in the evening between 6-9 you have flights arriving from such places as Doha, Abu Dhabi, Kathmandu, .... now, don't misread what I am saying, but the fact is that from my observation I have noticed that Customs tends to take longer to examine a person coming from a Middle East/South Asian country, then they do for a person arriving from ASEAN, European, USA. So, if your plane lands 5 mins after the one from Pakistan arrived, then I'm very sorry my friend but you are going to be waiting in the customs que for a long time (maybe 1 hr!)

PS: Once you pass customs, take note of where you are suppose to pick up the bags. Sometimes it will say belt 16, but after standing there for a while someone will change their minds and all of a suddent your flight will no longer be belt 16. You have to go back, check the screen then find out that you can now pick up your bag all the way at the other end :)

I discovered a hidden gem in Bangkok! The first time I visited the city, I didn't know where to stay, all I knew was that I wanted something decent, but cheap. So searching asiarooms.com I chose The Classic Place Hotel. I believe the price at that time (and it vary's only little throughout the year) was about USD 35/night! With that price I didn't think I could expect much (even thought the reviews on asiarooms.com were mostly positive) but I was very surprised!
The rooms are big!
The rooms are clean!
Breakfast is included in the price
Hotel even has a swimming pool.
It is located in Sukhumvit, so you are in a central area to begin with, plus there is a Skytrain station just 2 mins walk around the corner.

I don't know where else in the city you can find a hotel this good, at this price, and at this convenient location. I would stay at this hotel everytime I go to Bangkok, and I recommend you do too if you are a budget traveler.

Enjoy your stay.
