Day Two - Belize City, Belize
Tuesday was our first port of call in Belize City, Belize. We arranged for a barrier reef snorkel excursion through the ship. We were to wait in the main theater until our trip was called to the tenders. This port would be the only time during the trip we would tender into the mainland. The private tender was to meet us at the ship for a short ride to the barrier reef.
This barrier reef is the second longest in the world and the longest in the western hemisphere. When reading about this tour, the promise of an extensive coral formations and colorful tropical fish caught our eye. The Turneffe Atoll didn't disappoint us! I must say I think this area was the very best snorkeling I've done! The water was so very clear, and the coral was the most colorful I've experienced! Snorkelers of all skill levels could enjoy the beautiful sights here.
Our guides were very helpful and offered great tips to make the tour the best. We were left to explore the reef for about an hour which went by so quickly. Pictures just don't do the area justice, but I hope you can imagine the beauty of the reef. After snorkeling, the boat took us to a small white sand beach island. There you could take a fresh water shower, change clothes, pick up a tropical drink or snack, lounge in a hammock or on a lounge chair, kayak, swim, or just relax. It was a very warm, sunny day so I didn't mind doing a little bit of nothing. All too soon we were called to come back on the tender to head to the ship. I could have spent all day there just doing nothing!
After a shower and change into warm weather clothes, we boarded a tender to the mainland drop off location of the Belize Tourism Village.
There are a few shopping places there recommended by the ship, and a couple restaurants. A quick look around at familiar named shops and some local stands, we then decided to eat at a local restaurant - The Wet Lizard Bar and Restaurant. You must climb the steps to visit this place on the second story of the building overlooking the Belize Harbour. (A review of The Wet Lizard will be posted soon.)The featured brew was the Belikan beer - the area's best known beer. Supposedly, the local water and sugar give this beer it's special flavor. I had just a taste and didn't think it was too bad, but it just wasn't to my husband's liking. As for the Wet Lizard, what a nice place for some local food.
All too soon, it was time to tender back to the ship.
One big disadvantage of sailing on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, the lines and waiting for the tender in 90 degree heat. The Daiquiri Bar was conveniently located close to the tender dock, so instead of waiting in the line that stretch far down the sidewalk, we enjoyed a strawberry daiquiri underneath a huge ceiling fan! We then took the last tender to the ship - well refreshed!I would recommend a visit to Belize based on my short stay there. I would like to go back sometime and visit a little more of the area. The snorkeling has to be the best in the Caribbean! Next time, we have decided to go inland a little to see what may be awaiting us!
Back on the ship after dinner, we found a stingray towel animal on our bed - a cute little guy which provided us a chuckle. Tomorrow's destination - Costa Maya and another adventure!
