Jobe Sweeney my 5th Great Grandpa
Me and Tina have been traveling all over Kentucky looking up ancestors stones and doing anything we can to preserve them. We still have lots to find and lots to do.  Moses Sweeney,  My 6th Great grandfather was born near Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland.  Moses came to America with his father Charles(c . 1754-1766), when he was about four.  He married Elizabeth Johnson who was from Antrim, Ireland, or from New Jersey. Her family is said to be cousins of Richard M. Johnson, Vice President of the United States. There is some evidence that they settled in Virginia, and built a mill along the Slate River (now Buckingham Co, VA), had several children there and then relocated to what is now Lincoln Co, KY. Moses built a log home in 1787, where his family lived until his death.
My Grandparents
Some relocated nearer to Springfield, KY.  Moses Sweeney  was one of the pioneers of Lincoln Co, Ky and was contemporary with Daniel Boone.  Soon after his arrival in KY, one of his children was killed by the Indians. The inscription on Moses Sweeney's gravestone was illegible by 1951 and on July 5 of that year, William E. and Mary A. Sweeney and Nettie and Elsie, children of Zach. T. Sweeney placed a new marker with a duplicate inscription at the foot of the grave. Moses Sweeney Has at least 19, 000 descendents currently recorded by Jay Sweeney in his 5th edition CD book.  This is quite fun and never runs dry of information. We still have some work to do on the stones and graves but we are waiting on the weather.  I have been searching for my Great great Grandma and Grandpa ( Job and America Sweeney) who died In SmithField Ky,  But there is no record (Still searching) so the hunt continues.

I admire what you have done with Moses and descendants. My wife is a descendant through Millie (Millicent),daughter of Moses, who married Jesse Peter. She is buried in the Peter Family Graveyard in Washington Co., KY. Along the way, this trail mingled in with the Kentucky families of McDonald, Redding, and Epperson- eventully making it to Louisiana. The Johnson family seems to be heavy on politicians, hunters, and soldiers.

Millie's Children were Mountford, Jordan, Archibald, Martha, Hardin, Preston, Kiturah, China, and Paris. The Sweeney name was kept alive in this generation by Jesse and his second wife, Elizabeth Graves. They had a daughter named Millie Sweeney (b. 1818). Two of their sons fought in the Civil War- one for the North and the other for the South.

Hi Joe, I too have wandered around KY looking for headstones. My Dad's side is from Carter, Boyd, and Johnson counties. I have a gg-grandfater who was in the Civil War. I found a distant relative who knew where his grave was, and had even gotten the inscriptions from it. But, when I could finally get the time, money, and will to go all at the same time, the stone was gone! Very sad. Good luck in your search!
