Arcata, CA to Fort Bragg, CA

We left Arcata on the coast this morning with gray skies overhead but soon left them behind for the sunny and blue sky we were expecting to see in CA. Heading down 101 we took a 32-mile side trip on "the Avenue of the Giants” a very scenic road through Humboldt Redwood State Park.
Wanting to see more of the CA coastline we took hwy 1 turnoff at Leggett. The map just doesn’t show in enough detail all of the 22 miles of twists, curves and hairpin turns that we encountered in doing that. The foamy, breakwaters along the coastline were worth it though. The old Fort Bragg no longer exists at its namesake’s town having gone out of use during the civil war. We did find out that Fort Bragg in NC is named after the same man.
We ended up at the Dodge dealer at 4:30 after experiencing a strange grinding noise when turning either left or right. To our great pleasure they fit us right in, found the problem, fixed it and had us out within 45 min. The brake shim was loose causing the grinding noise. I sure am thankful we didn’t experience problems when traveling the mountains of hwy 1.
