Above the swiss alps
In febr/March 2006 i (Dennis) spent 4 weeks on the island of Crete for work. As my work as a 'military' police officer we supported the dutch Airfprce on there exercise on the greek island. Ofcourse i wont go into detail about that. Our main task over there as police is the same a what you can expect from you local police officer at home. E.g we responded to traffic accidents, lost goods, teft and bar fights. The usual things. The Airforce had about 400 soldiers on that exercise. Me and my other 3 colleges flew down to the island of Crete in the last week of februari 2006. It is a 3,5 hr flight from Eindhoven airport in the South of the netherlands. Once arriving we were taken by bus to our hotel a few kilometers form Chania Downtown in a town called Porto Platanias.
We got our room in a really nice 5 star hotel. In wich we stayed for 4 weeks (very annoying!!)hahaha. Next day we went to a greek base nearby and got a room in a office building were we put up our temporarily police office. A lot of improvizing comes with that. After 2 days on the island we drove down with a car to the main military harbor were or ship arrived with our duty vehicles and more personel stuff in big boxes. Meanwhile the airforce was preparing the start of t here exercise. We sometimes took a look what they were doing but realy didn't have any idea what there were doing. In the weeks that followed we understood a little bit from what was going on. Ofcourse i can't tell anything about the exercise itself. In the 4 weeks we've been there we pretty much saw a great part of this beautiful island.

We had 24 hr shift so were were off work pretty often to explore. The south part of the island is the more tropical part were there are the nicest beaches. We also took a day trip to the main capitol of crete Heraklion. Most of the times we had dinner on the military base but sometimes we went downtown for some good original greek food. After 4 weeks it was time to go home again and got releaved by 4 other colleges of our. They also stayed 4 weeks, because the exercise was a total of 8 weeks. We flew home in a german turbo prop cargo plane, whitch had no real seats but somekind of hanging nets were you had to sit in. And the noice was incredible. The flight was 6 hrs but a good experience. The year after in 2007 i went back with Jasmyn to Chania and showed here around this great island i 'worked'at.
The county of Chania (Hania) covers the western part of Crete and has an area of 2.376 km2 and with a population of 140,000 residents (1991 inventory). The county is divided into 5 provinces with the capital the city of Chania (52.000 population). Since 1999 the county is divided into 23 counties and 2 provinces.
The Municipality of Chania is an ideal tourist destination that offers more than the dazzling sun and the blue sea. It offers a beautiful natural environment, a unique culture and history, wonderful cuisine, fresh products and a high quality of life.
