This blog contains general information about things to see and do in Honolulu/Oahu. I'll also use it for miscellaneous tips.

Waikiki at night

Kuhio Avenue
I arrived early for my dinner reservation so I took the opportunity to walk down Kuhio Avenue and take some photos. Kuhio is one block away from Waikiki Beach, thus the hotels are not as expensive as the hotels that are on the oceanfront. You will find smaller hotels running up and down Kuhio avenue. There are a lot of little bars and shops along the street. They aren't as fancy as the establishments on the main road, Kalakaua Avenue.

I ate too much for dinner and decided to take a walk before driving home. This time I walked down to Waikiki Beach and walked down the main road, Kalakaua Avenue. This is where you will find the fancy stores, big shopping plazas and chain restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood and Cheesecake Factory. Street performers and artists will try and get your tourist dollars. Some are better than others. I liked the steel drum musician. The International Marketplace was alive with tourists buying junk souvenirs. I saw two girls practicing their hula on the beach and I stopped to take some blurry photos. Just another night in Waikiki.

Best steaks in town
This has to be the best steakhouse in Honolulu. It's a classy steakhouse, not a family all-you-can-eat salad bar type of steakhouse. It is very unassuming from the outside. You can't even see it from the street. Once you enter the restaurant, you'll instantly know you're destined for something special. Instead of jumping on the trendy, boutique restaurant craze, Hy's is an old-school steakhouse. The walls are covered in dark wood and the posts and beams are made of intricately carved wood. Oil paintings and mirrors cover the walls. Hy's isn't one large room but rather several smaller rooms linked together. It makes for a cozy atmosphere. Service is impeccable.

Now on the the important stuff, the food. You must respect a place that has a huge grill surrounded by glass, offering the patrons the ability to see the chef grilling the meat. Appetizers lean towards the seafood and average $16. Oysters Rockefeller, Escargot, Thai Scallops and Filet Mignon Tartare are just a few of the appetizers. They always offer Onion Soup Gratinee and a Soup Du Jour, which this evening was a sumptuous Lobster Bisque. The usual salads are offered but one notable salad is the Caesar Salad for two. It is prepared tableside with the wooden salad bowl, anchovy paste, egg yolk, etc... Entrees are LOTS OF STEAK. NY strip, Delmonico, Filet Mignon, T-Bones, Prime Rib and a few house creations. Steaks average around $50. Seafood entrees average $45. Dishes are Filet of Salmon, Scallops, Hawaiian Snapper and Fruits De Mer, Lobster tail and crab legs are $63. You can also get a steak and seafood combo if you can't decide between the two. Hy's prepares some classic desserts: Cherries Jubilee, Bananas Foster and Strawberry Flambe.

I always love coming to Hy's. Never had a bad meal or bad service. They have an extensive wine list too. Dinner for four including soup, steaks, dessert and a bottle of wine came to $350 without tip. Well worth every penny.
